Uppsala needs to become the European Capital of Culture

The effort to apply began as early as 2018 with a preliminary study. The approach: We are not doing it because we deserve it, but because we need it. To date, nearly 2000 individuals have participated in a process that has engaged local, national, and international levels. The outcome of meetings and dialogues is clear: Culture creates a better Uppsala.

The vision: A cultural process

The project is based on the development planned in Uppsala and the region. Planning of the city and countryside, new public transport, railways, bike paths, and walkways form clear lines. Between the lines – Between the Lines – we people build what is actually the society. Our application describes a cultural process. It aims to create new conditions and spaces for culture throughout the region and link it to more sectors of society. We use the power of culture to foster participation and engagement for a more sustainable society.
