Andy envisions Xpression as a destination made up of shipping containers, offering a mix of culture, music, fashion, food, and drink. To advance this project, he applied for grants from the cultural committee, aiming to establish a permanent meeting place where diverse forms of culture converge, something previously nonexistent in Uppsala.
Xpression resembles Culture Night – but year-round
Andy describes Xpression as a miniature version of Culture Night, available all year round, serving as a hub for discovering and drawing inspiration from previously unrepresented cultures in Uppsala.
It’s time we offered more than just the cathedral and the art museum.
Growing up in England, Andy experienced the open culture on the streets of London. He notes a lack of spontaneous cultural experiences in Uppsala and Sweden at large.
It’s rare to walk by a place and want to enter based on what you hear or see from outside. People don’t just go out in Uppsala to see what’s happening that day. That’s a feeling very much present in London.
Andy has a diverse background, including roles as a graphic designer, DJ, actor, and web designer. He is currently working full-time on a website that compiles reviews of Scandinavian soul music. With the Xpression container park, this website could have a physical home surrounded by various cultural activities centered around music.
Xpression aims for the Capital of Culture year
With this project, Andy seeks to expand the concept of culture not only for the Capital of Culture year but for the next generation. He believes culture is something we create together and is more significant than admiring grand buildings.
If we’re to become the Capital of Culture, we must do something entirely different. This place will become a hub for bringing people together around a broader form of culture that can spread throughout Uppsala. Xpression will inspire people to see culture as vibrant and unique.
