“What an affirmation for Uppsala and our application. We are so pleased that the panel sees all the possibilities and the commitment that exists in Uppsala, the cultural sector, Region Uppsala, the business community, Uppsala University, and not least among the residents. Now we continue and make things concrete,” says Patric Kiraly, the main project manager for the Capital of Culture year, Uppsala Municipality.
An intense effort now begins to develop and specify the program that will complement the application. This will be done through the “culture process,” a unique method that, with culture as a driving force, creates participation and commitment for a more sustainable society, locally, nationally, and internationally. The culture process is based on the development planned in Uppsala and the region. Planning of the city and countryside, new public transport, railways, bicycle paths, and walkways are clear lines of work, “Between the Lines” which is also the name of Uppsala’s application.
The Between the Lines concept is a metaphor based on the investments in Uppsala in the coming years. Urban and rural planning, bus and tram lines, railways, bicycle paths, and walkways are the lines. Between the Lines, we people build what is the society itself.
This autumn, the European Commission’s international panel of experts will make the final decision on whether Uppsala or Kiruna, along with a Polish city, will be titled European Capitals of Culture 2029?
